This study covers the events from before the birth of Christ through to His death, burial, resurrection and ascension.

Dr. Arnold Fruchtenbaum developed this work and has taught it to many thousands over the last 40 years. The study notes have been transcribed from his teachings at Camp Shoshanah, Ariel Ministries’ annual Bible Teaching Camp in upstate New York.

It is appropriate to describe the author’s approach as it is this which uncovers so much important detail which is often overlooked or unexplained in other studies. Firstly as the title explains, the series is from a first-century Jewish perspective – a Jewish Frame of Reference.

The Old Testament tells us of the fall of man, the consequent separation of man from God and the hopelessness of man’s situation. But it also tells us of the promises of God, and that He will provide a redeemer- His Son- who would become flesh in order to come to earth to die for the salvation of mankind. We note that the covenant promises were made with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, that the redeemer would be the Jewish God/Man King, and that He would be born in Bethlehem.

His birth, growth, mission and ministry, His rejection, trial, burial, resurrection and ascension were all played out in a first century Jewish culture. For this reason any study of the Life of Christ needs to recognise this Jewish Frame of Reference. This is not merely the understanding of some Jewish idioms or colloquialisms but it requires a full and proper appreciation of the theological, cultural, political and geographical context into which Jesus entered. The gospel writers did not explain the Jewish frame of reference because in their day it was clearly understood. It was largely forgotten after the fourth century.

Dr. Fruchtenbaum is eminently qualified for this task. His orthodox Jewish heritage, his scholarly understanding Greek, Hebrew, Jewish history, historical geography and archaeology, and culture, all undergird his extensive biblical and theological knowledge.

Secondly the author has adopted a thematic approach in which the life and ministry of Jesus is considered as having an overall theme with one event relating to the next in a continuous stream of thought. The advantage to this approach is that we see the correlation between events and teachings. The study uses the paragraph format developed and published by A.T. Robertson in his book ‘A Harmony of the Gospels. In this book, Robertson harmonises the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, placing them in chronological order. This enables the student to draw from the various gospels all that the writers report from their viewpoints and a simple direct and speedy fashion.

The outline is an essential aid to understanding the study.

As the Life of Christ unfolds the student will be challenged to learn more about the particular events, subjects and doctrines as these are encountered.

The study will have adequate time during and after the lessons for all questions.
